Receiving your lab results can feel overwhelming, especially when the report is filled with abbreviations, percentages, reference ranges, and numbers that are difficult to interpret. You may see a result marked high or low and immediately wonder whether something is seriously wrong.
At Houston Concierge Medicine, Dr. Gregory Burzynski helps patients understand what their results may mean within the context of their overall health. A lab value can provide useful information, but it should not be viewed in isolation.
Your symptoms, medical history, medications, daily habits, family history, previous results, and other laboratory markers may all affect how a number is interpreted. Three commonly reviewed measurements are TSH, A1C, and cholesterol.
TSH stands for thyroid-stimulating hormone. It is produced by the pituitary gland and signals the thyroid to produce hormones that help regulate many functions throughout the body.
A TSH test is commonly used to evaluate thyroid function and may be ordered when someone is experiencing symptoms that could be associated with an underactive or overactive thyroid.
Thyroid hormones influence metabolism, body temperature, heart rate, digestion, muscle function, and energy use. When thyroid activity changes, a person may notice symptoms such as fatigue, changes in weight, sensitivity to heat or cold, difficulty concentrating, changes in mood, or an irregular heartbeat.
However, these symptoms can have many possible causes. A TSH result alone does not always provide the complete answer. Depending on the result and the patient’s symptoms, additional thyroid testing may include free T4, T3, thyroid antibodies, or follow-up measurements.
Factors that may be considered during a thyroid review include:
• Whether the TSH level has changed over time
• Current medications and supplements
• Pregnancy, menopause, or other hormonal changes
• Symptoms that may suggest altered thyroid activity
• Results from additional thyroid tests
A value that falls outside a laboratory’s reference range does not automatically confirm a thyroid disorder. Reference ranges can also vary slightly between laboratories, making professional interpretation important.
A1C is a blood test that estimates your average blood sugar level over approximately the previous two to three months. It is commonly used to screen for prediabetes and diabetes and to monitor blood sugar management in people who have already been diagnosed.
Unlike a single glucose reading, which shows blood sugar at one point in time, A1C provides a broader view. It measures the percentage of hemoglobin in red blood cells that has glucose attached to it.
A higher A1C may indicate that blood sugar has been elevated more frequently. However, it does not show every temporary spike or drop. Certain health conditions, blood disorders, recent blood loss, pregnancy, kidney disease, and some medications may also affect the accuracy of an A1C result.
When reviewing A1C, your provider may also consider fasting glucose, eating patterns, activity levels, medications, sleep, stress, body composition, and family history. Changes over time can be especially helpful because they show whether blood sugar regulation appears stable, improving, or moving in an unhealthy direction.
A cholesterol test, often called a lipid panel, usually includes total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides.
LDL carries cholesterol through the bloodstream and may contribute to plaque buildup in the arteries when levels are elevated. HDL helps transport cholesterol away from the arteries. Triglycerides are a separate type of blood fat that is also included in most lipid panels.
Your cholesterol results may be influenced by:
• Genetics and family history
• Eating and exercise habits
• Smoking or alcohol use
• Thyroid, liver, or kidney conditions
• Diabetes, insulin resistance, and certain medications
There is no single cholesterol number that determines a person’s complete cardiovascular risk. Blood pressure, age, family history, blood sugar, inflammation, smoking history, and other factors may also need to be considered.
Lab reports are helpful tools, but they are only one part of a broader health assessment. A number that appears normal may still deserve attention when symptoms are present or when it has changed significantly from a previous result.
The opposite can also be true. A mildly abnormal result may be temporary or may need to be repeated before conclusions are made. Hydration, fasting status, illness, medications, exercise, and the timing of the test can influence certain laboratory measurements.

Understanding your laboratory results can help you have more informed conversations about prevention, treatment, and long-term health. Depending on your results, the next step may involve monitoring, additional testing, lifestyle adjustments, medication, or no immediate intervention.
